The Color of My Skin….{Poem}…

 The Color of My Skin

I’ve been judged, disliked, rejected and etc

All because of the color of my skin

Not by other races

But by my own

It hurts of course

It hurt more when it’s my own family

I got a chocolate complexion

I got nice, silky and sexy skin

But not everyone feels the same

Hard to believe but at times I felt ashamed

I’ve asked God “Why am I dark?”

I liked this guy so much

He was cute and smart

I thought he was feeling me

Nope, he claimed he had girl

But on the real

He didn’t like my skin tone

It’s a situation I’m too familiar

They mistreated me when I was younger

They tried to feed me cheap food

And tried to buy me things I really didn’t need at my age

I grew up, realized what was going on

I saw that they were my family

Light skin, long hair and materialistic

That’s what they think

Realizing I knew they disliked me

They tried to make it up

Pretending to like me

And they “love” me

Graduation comes and they wanna hype me

In reality I haven’t held a relationship with you in years

Made me feel bad and cry unnecessary tears

I felt like my skin tone was ugly

At one point it became my insecurity

But I realized that my skin is just

The outside of me

It’s only a layer of me

It’s not my full identity

I’m dark and beautiful

My skin does not determine…

My life

My dreams

My personality

My diversity

My love

It’s a shame that a skin tone

Can determine someone’s love

Can make a human feel less than they are

Make my own grandmother think less of me

And it’s all because of the color of my skin

This poem was written a long time ago but it touches home for me on many levels and it reminds me to embrace who I am, who I’ve become and keep fighting to break barriers. In the african american community there’s so much dark skin vs. light skin stuff going on it makes me sick. Regardless dark or light at the end of the day we are all african american so it doesn’t matter. So yeah I post this poem to encourage everyone to embrace themselves for who they are and where they come from. It’s FINE TO BE WHO YOU ARE AND WHO DON’T ACCEPT YOU…that’s on them.
